Too Hard to Swallow
UGK Releases Super Tight
In less than 2 years, Pimp C and Bun followed up with a strong sophomore project. Super Tight was released on August 30, 1994. This album featured several fan favorites including It’s Supposed to Bubble and Front, Back & Side to Side. This would also be the first album where UGK worked with The Meters guitarist, Leo Nocentelli.
Ridin’ Dirty Solidifies UGK As Rap Royalty
On July 30, 1996, UGK released the critically acclaimed and most popular album to date, Ridin’ Dirty. To many fans and critics, this album is a contender for one of the best Hip Hop albums ever. The album not only features the dynamic bars and storytelling, but Pimp C coming into his own as a music producer that would influence a generation to follow. The album featured Hip Hop music staples like the soulful One Day, high octane Murder, Hi-Life and Pinky Ring.
UGK Returns with Dirty Money
After a five year hiatus, UGK followed up the success of Ridin’ Dirty with Dirty Money. Originally released November 13, 2001, Dirty Money debuted #1 on Billboard and spent 15 weeks on the charts. The album is filled with club bangers Let Me See It, Choppin’ Blades and Take it Off. Once again, Pimp C led the production for the project and delivered the signature sound the Underground Kingz were known for.
Pimp C Debuts as a Solo Artist on The Sweet James Jones Stories
For his debut solo release, Pimp C brought one of his famous personas to life. The Sweet James Jones Stories was released March 2, 2015, with Atlantic Records. The album peaked at #3 on Billboard, and gave life to Southern Hip Hop classics Hogg in the Game, I’s a Playa, and I Know You Stapped. There is a bootleg version of the album, with a different track listing, recorded by Pimp C while he was in jail. Sweet James Jones: Live From The Harris County Jail has become a fan collectible.
Pimp C Finds Gold with Pimpalation
Pimp C secured his first Gold Plaque as a solo artist with his second, and ultimately the last solo album he’d release during his lifetime, Pimpalation. Pimp C released Pimpalation July 11, 2006, after completing 4 years of an 8-year prison sentence. The album debuted #3 on the US Billboard chart, but would quickly reach the #1 spot and be certified Gold by the RIAA. The album featured guest production by Mike Dean and Mannie Fresh, and guest appearances by Bun B, 8Ball & MJG, Lil Boosie, Lil Keke, and Slim Thug. The project produced singles I’m Free, Pourin’ Up, and his now-famous call to unity, Knockin’ Doorz Down.
Underground Kingz Reign Supreme
UGK didn’t make the fans wait too long for another classic album following Pimp C’s release from prison. On August 7, 2007, Underground Kingz was released and would reach #1 on Billboard 3 weeks after it’s release, and go on to be certified Gold by the RIAA. More importantly, the double-disc album gave life to several underground and mainstream hits. Da Game Belongs to Me as well as one of the most known and beloved Hip Hop songs ever recorded, Intl’ Players Anthem (I Choose You), were both on the Underground Kingz album. The project’s production was led by Pimp C and includes contributions by DJ Paul, Juicy J, Scarface, Lil Jon, DJ Marley Marl and Swizz Beatz. The album features guest appearances by Outkast, Too Short, Rick Ross, Big Daddy Kane, T.I., Z-Ro and Talib Kweli, among others.
It’s Still “UGK 4 Life”
Released March 31, 2009, just 15 months after Pimp C’s untimely passing, UGK 4 Life would be the first posthumous project released featuring the emcee/producer. The lead single from the project, Da Game Been Good to Me, was released online on January 16, 2009. Upon release, UGK 4 Life received critical acclaim. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album has received a score of 84, based on 11 reviews indicating universal acclaim. The album debuted at #6 on Billboard and remain on the charts for 11 weeks.
Fans Meet “The Naked Soul of Sweet Jones”
The Naked Soul of Sweet Jones is the third solo album by Pimp C and the first of 3 posthumous projects to date. Released on October 5, 2010, the album would peak at #5 on Billboard, and remain on the charts for 6 weeks. The album featured guest appearances by Lil Boosie, Too $hort, Webbie and Rick Ross.
“Long Live the Pimp”
Long Live the Pimp, the fifth Pimp C solo album. Released December 4, 2015, by Mass Appeal Records, Long Live the Pimp peaked at #11 on Billboard. Pimp C’s widow, Chinara Butler served as Co-Executive Producer of the star-studded project featured production by Juicy J (who is also a featured artist on the project), and guest appearances by Nas, Lil Wayne, Bun B, A$AP Rocky, David Banner, among others. The title of the album has become a homage and popular hashtag used by Pimp C fans online and off. #LongLiveThePimp
